What is CVT transmission fluid?

Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVTs) in vehicles exceeded 15 million globally in 2020, and due to their fuel reduction and technological improvements, their use has continued to expand.  If you drive a vehicle with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), your transmission requires specific fluid to help it perform well and last as long as possible.

Like engine oil, transmission fluid needs to be changed regularly, usually every 30,000 miles depending on your vehicle’s specifications, or more often if you have extreme performance situations.

Purpose of Transmission Fluids

  • Lubricates moving parts
  • Control hydraulic system
  • Transmit engine torque
  • Keeps parts clean
  • Protects parts from wear
  • Remove heat from internal parts

History of ENEOS and CVT Fluid

ENEOS has been making CVT fluid as factory fill for Japanese automakers since 2005. Development of CVTF is based on knowledge gained through joint development with these automakers for all CVT models of Japanese vehicles. ENEOS maintains an R&D relationship with Japanese automakers.

Achievements in CVTF technology by ENEOS include: increased fuel efficiency, acceleration, and quietness of operation. These were achieved by increasing transmission torque capacity, variator shift characteristics and noise prevention, shudder prevention, viscosity temperature characteristics, and oxidation stability.

ENEOS CVT fluids contain additives developed by our unique technology, which is patented. This is proprietary technology that no other company can imitate.

How do you know transmission fluid is failing / degrading?

You may experience:

  • Reduced acceleration
  • Reduced fuel efficiency

Degraded transmission oil can lead to transmission failure if not promptly corrected.

What kind of CVT fluid should you get for your vehicle?

You may be wondering what type of fluid you need, or specifically, whether you need to purchase the manufacturer-produced fluid.

For CVTs with specific fluid requirements, it is recommended owners use either “genuine” fluids from the automotive manufacturer, or fluids created by professionals who have close relationships to automotive manufacturers and are capable of producing lubricants that meet the manufacturer’s CVTF requirements.

Since these CVT specifications are not released except to OE suppliers, you can trust ENEOS to produce fluid addressing all specs of Japanese CVTs, plus proprietary performance enhancements.
