Shane Stewart and Larson Marks Racing extended their top-10 streak to 10 races following a double-header at the Stockton (Calif.) Dirt Track this weekend. Stewart finished third on Friday and followed it with a late-race charge into the top 10 on Saturday.
Stewart was the eighth-fastest qualifier Friday night at the Stockton Dirt Track and won his heat race despite having some issues with the motor. The Larson Marks Racing team made a quick engine swap before the dash, where they started fifth.
Stewart gained one spot in the dash to earn the fourth place starting position in Friday night’s feature. Shortly after halfway, he took over the third position. Stewart was able to catch the leaders in lapped traffic, but was unable to take over to the top spot and finished third.
“We had a little motor issue and thank goodness it held together for that heat race win,” Stewart said. “It’s so crucial to get a first or second to get yourself in the dash. We’ve just got to keep working on it. Donny [Schatz] and Brad [Sweet] are going to be tough all year long and the way the format is, you’ve got to get qualified and get through your heat race.”
On Saturday, Stewart was the seventh driver to make his laps in qualifying, and he turned the 20th-fastest lap overall. He started and finished seventh in his heat race, sending him to the Last Chance Showdown. Stewart made a late-race pass for the lead in the Last Chance Showdown, advancing Larson Marks Racing into the feature. Stewart started 19th for the 30-lap feature event and was able to make a late-race charge to finish in 10th place.
