GARAGE by ENEOS: Evasive Motorsports
The tradition of speed shops –businesses that sell and install aftermarket performance parts – reaches back to the 1940s. Geared towards domestic cars, a new generation of car enthusiast appeared in the late ’90s and early 2000s. It was well informed and began to explore lighter, more athletic cars from Japan and Europe. Not unlike domestic hot rodders, the new movement wanted to go fast, and turned to establishments like Evasive Motorsports in Santa Fe Springs, CA to satisfy the need.
Founded in 2002, Evasive is co-owned by Mike Chang and Tony Kwan. Like so many before them, it began as a side gig selling aftermarket parts in their early 20s. Today it focuses on race prep, installations, and aftermarket parts sales (which includes a successful online storefront) from their 12000 sqft facility. They have the resources and expert staff to offer on-site services including engine and chassis tuning, fabrication, and dyno testing.
Evasive has a traditional “Race on Sunday, sell on Monday” approach to business. So they like to hit the track, frequently at local Time Attacks, and most notably to places like Tsukuba Circuit in Japan as well as Pikes Peak Hill Climb in Colorado.
Evasive first built its famous Scion FR-S for the 2013 Pikes Peak event. They campaigned the “Race to the Clouds” consecutively until 2016. For the first two years the car had a supercharged version of the FR-S flat-4 engine before swapping to the stouter turbocharged and stroked Toyota 2JZ inline-6.
Evasive doesn’t produce run-of-the-mill race cars, however. They’ve earned a reputation for creating works of art. The shop preaches a doctrine of balance in their builds, and through that ideology has created some of the most highly respected vehicles in the automotive enthusiast space. Whether it’s their Mitsubishi Evo IX, Nissan GT-R, or recently debuted Honda Civic Type R, there’s no mistaking an Evasive car – robust aero, striking livery, proper stance and plenty of power. Their Honda S2000 has even been immortalized as a Hot Wheels die-cast model.
And the FR-S continues to charge hard. In 2018, wrapped in a unique ENEOS livery and with pro Formula DRIFT driver Dai Yoshihara behind the wheel, the Scion most recently triumphed in the Unlimited RWD TimeAttack class at the Gridlife South Festival. The car was also been on display with ENEOS at Formula DRIFT events and at the annual SEMA Show in Las Vegas.
As an authorized ENEOS dealer, the Japanese-engineered engine and gear oils dovetail nicely into Evasive Motorsports’ business. Having been created by the same company that fills the majority of cars leaving Japanese automotive assembly plants, many Evasive customers see the value in using the high-quality ENOS products. As the Original JDM Motor Oil, ENEOS has been at the heart of the automotive performance industry for decades. Evasive Motorsports stocks a range of products for its customers cars and is happy to endorse the benefits of the high tech oils.
