Mooresville, N.C. (April 27, 2014) — Shane Stewart and Larson Marks Racing finished second in Saturday’s World of Outlaws race at the historic Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas. The runner-up finish was the team’s sixth of the 2015 season.
Stewart and defending champion and eventual winner Donny Schatz traded slide jobs throughout the race to trade the lead, with Stewart leading laps eight through 16.
“Anytime (Schatz is) out front he sets a pretty torrid pace,” Stewart said. “I was trying to stay with him just in case he got caught up in lapped traffic. You just can’t make any mistakes with him running behind you. He lost the lead doing that and of course I did too.
“I continue to get great race cars every weekend and that’s a testament to this race team. I’m proud to be the guy that gets to drive this Larson Marks car.”
Stewart earned quick time – his third of 2015 – to start the evening. After finishing third in his heat race, Stewart lined up fourth in the dash. The Larson Marks Racing team gained two positions in the dash to finish second and set the outside front row starting spot for the feature event.
Schatz, who started on the pole, held the lead for the first seven laps of the event. Stewart, however, utilized a classic slide job in Turn 2 to take over the lead on lap eight. Although Stewart put space between himself and the 15 of Schatz, Schatz closed in as the duo raced into heavy traffic. On lap 16, he utilized Stewart’s earlier move and slid the Larson Marks Racing two off of Turn 2 to regain the lead and hold it until the checkered.
Stewart trails Schatz by 26 points in the series standings and leads third-place Brad Sweet by 47 points.
The World of Outlaws will have a three-day race weekend this week, including Salina (Okla.) Highbanks Speedway on Friday, Federated Raceway at I-55 in Pevely, Mo. on Saturday, and Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind. on Sunday.
